With the internet now so freely available, the ability to work online at home is something that is a very real opportunity for most people. The biggest concerns about working at home seem to revolve around the cost. It is a common misunderstanding that in order to work online at home that you have to spend money. The truth is that sometimes you can get success for free in the work at home market.
The Meaning of Free
You may be thinking that you know the meaning of free. You may know the accepted, general meaning of free, but when it comes to working at home, free can take on a whole new meaning.
Sometimes free may mean free but with a small cost. You may get the main product for free but have to pay for shipping or for some other aspect you will need as well.
You have to realize that free is not always 100% free. Reading the fine print is important so you do not get caught up in a 'free-but' situation.
Things to Know About Free
Free stuff can be great. When you do not have to pay for something it always is a plus. However, when you are working at home and trying to establish yourself in the work at home market, you may just want to skip the freebies.
Free websites are very appealing, but they are also very damaging. Most people who know about the online atmosphere and environment will avoid free websites like the plague. They just scream unprofessional. You just can not get anywhere in an online business trying to use a free website service.
Other freebies, though, are fine. Business cards are a great example. However, business cards are also an example of a 'free-but' offer. You do get the cards for free and they work wonderfully, but you have to usually pay for shipping and handling.
Tips on Freebies
In order to get the most benefit from freebies you will need to understand the bottom line. Here are some things that you should keep in mind when determining if free is the best way to go:
- Avoid anything that doesn't promote you or your business. This is one reason free websites do not work. You usually have no control over the advertising so you could have competition ads on your site. Also your domain name is usually not easy to remember and includes the website owner's domain name as well as yours.
- Keep professional. Sometimes free things may come with some questionable backing. You want to make sure that your free service or product is all about your information and that it does not include anything that may shine a bad light on your business or you.
- Consider the true value. If something is free but it is damaging or not helpful then it isn't even worth your time to get it. Make sure that you are not just using something just because it is free. Rather use what you need and forget what you do not need.
